had a big ole crew meet up and do a point to point run..we started at meridian and ran up to Louies.

Plan today was to go easy the first 10 and pick up the last 10..we picked up 4 more runners at Lake Overholser and that is where Jesse and i did a pickup..

Jesse stayed with me for a couple of miles and I waited for him at Rogers truck cause we had water there and i didn't know if he knew the way back. so after giving him a little instruction on how to get back i took off again.

I hit 20 miles at S&S park and jogged in  3 more miles from there easy.

Nice crew out 12 all together.

Met Ean out at lake hefner for a 10 mile tempo..decided to run the first miles a bit harder to make up for the wind i was going to hit when i got to the other side..about mile 6 i got a real bad side stitch and almost threw in the towel.

Decided it would be good to run it on out and tried taking some really deep breathes to try and get rid of it..I think it helped. Was able to mustard out a decent workout.

also broke in my new adios boost 2's ...the heel drop in them  is very minimal and i really felt my calves tighten up after i slowed.

Drove with J-Hat, Ean and Marilyn from my sisters house to the Hilton there in mid-town Houston and met up with Rog, Court and we walked over to bag check and lined up for the start..It was nice and chilly out but really good for running. We met up with a great big Okie crew on the start line. Got all the tanks emptied and gu'ed up and took my beet elite about 10 min before the gun, also took a 5hr about an hr before the gun.

I really started to notice I had to pee right after the national anthem but knew there wasn't getting out of line where I was located... I did bring an empty Gatorade bottle just for the occasions but decided to try and run it out...

At the start some volunteers were holding us back with a rope and slowly walking us up to the elite field. Several dudes made a quick slip under the rope and started a chain reaction...Later i heard a woman actually tripped and busted her tooth..

We got up there and i threw my shirt over to the side and took off. I got out with Amanda until things started clearing and saw Aaron (her boyfriend) and got up with him..he was shooting for sub 2:30 and was making a debut marathon. The first mile was a bit slow and I was good with it seeing how I had no warm-up and was pretty cold.

I took off from there and about mile 6.6 I witnessed something I hope no one ever has to witness or experience . A girl running the 1/2 about 5 strides ahead of me exploded with a bad case of diarrhea I thought for sure she was going to quit but she had no let up in her will.

What I saw going every which way hasn't words to describe...the smell was awful and to my surprise the girl kept on trucking...I was fixing to throw away my warm up hat and decided to make a bolt up to her and give it to her...She was so appreciative for it and I also decided to give her my gloves as well...she told me she was trying to qualify for the trials. I told her good luck and I stayed in front of her for the remainder of my run with the half marathoners. I found out later she in-fact didn't give up on her dream but finished even when she knew she wouldn't reach her goal...Never Quit

I ran a lot of the 2nd 1/2 with a woman from Canada named Rachel. She gapped me fairly well on a small hill close to the finish. I felt pretty good most of the race but at mile 10 or so i was going for my #2 gu and dropped it. I was a little worried about it but decided not to stop and pick it up hoping that they would hand some out. I started taking more Gatorade until I did finally grab one at mile 21 or so.

I wore my adios boost 2's for the first time in a race..they felt pretty good. I was really excited when i got up to the finish line and the clock was ticking right at 2:33ish  I tried to run under with a quick surge but was a little short...later I found out that my chip time was actually under so I'll take it. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. All my buddies had big runs and most everyone had a PR.

It feels great to get a PR on the first race of the year...

Congrats on the PR, Jason. I know you had commented on Strava after your last race that you are looking for sub-2:30 and I thought, "it's probably going to take running ~2:32 first." You are definitely moving in the right direction. A mighty fine start to the year. Always fun to watch you chip away.

Got out to Lake Hefner bright and early to pick up my packet..met Danny at the pick up and we did a warm-up..

We got back and lined up and started on time. My plan was to try and go out a bit harder with the wind to my back and try and make up for the time I would loose going into the wind. Aaron and some younger kid went with me till mile #2 and I had it down around 5:30's with a nice tail wind. I kept it there till we got over on the other side of the lake and slowed a bit I had about a 30sec lead at the turn aroun. I was wanting to try and hit 1/2 way at around 43-44 min. and I was real close to being where I wanted...I took 2 waters after the 1/2 and was nursing a gu. I got up on the dam and planned on hitting the water stop there but a crowd of runners doing the 15k made that impossible. Just after that I turned the dreaded corner on the dam and went right into about a 16-18 mph wind and was dodging runners. With a little more than 3miles to go Aaron had reeled me in and blew by me at a nice pace. I did about as much as I could do to catch him but he was a lot fresher than I was.

I was going for the all time master record in OK which is currently 1:28:38 and fell a bit short of it. I did however pick up the single age record by a couple of seconds and hit about a 4 min PR for the distance.

Had a great time hanging out and chatting with a bunch of folks.

Wow...what can I say about this crazy weekend of racing..

Let me begin from my house where Nate met me and we took off about 8 am after he worked all night.. I told him I would drive so he could try and get some Z's in on the way..He ended up getting maybe 2 hrs at best.

We got to the expo about 3ish and picked up our packets and got a free session on the compression boots which helped a bunch after an eight hr car ride.

We hopped back into the car and headed over to my sisters house about an hr away with the traffic. We did a small shake out run and then tanked up on some really good sushi. After dinner Nate was really tired and we headed back and hit the sack. Saturday morning we got up out of there a bit before 5 and went a different route that Carrie knew that didn't have hardly any stop lights.. We arrive at Woodlands a bit later than I would have liked  but still had time to warm up..we met Chris who was taking care of the elite field and he showed us where to leave our bags and I asked him where the ports were and he pointed us to the general public ports that had a line a mile long...

Before Nate and I left my car I made a valid and verifiable point to Nate that I learned from my buddy Jake Buhler...Never go to a race without a good supply of TP...Nate was very thankful for my advise and even more thankful that I had a good supply. We made our way to the woods and took care of some business. Afterwards we got a small 1 mile warmup  and I determined that I wasn't done with them woods so I went back.. We got our warmup clothes off and headed up to the start line which was about a 1/4 mile up from the VIP tent.

The morning was really nice about 50 deg. with a heavy fog...kinda eerie. We took off and a pack of  about 5 Kenyans and 1 Ethiopians jumped right out front there was a couple of dudes a little behind them I was probably about 8th or so for the first 4 miles.. about mile 3 I knew my pee urge wasn't going away and spotted a port right off the course and hit it.. I was running with the lead woman when i jumped off. After relieving myself i counted about 15-20 seconds behind her and wasn't too worried about the few lost seconds until about mile 6 when I had the ole dreadful bowel poop pains and at mile 7 I started trying to find a port.. just before mile 8 i couldn't take it anymore..I ducked down in the woods for a record setting poop and knew the cheap cotton gloves I had on were there for an important reason.. When I jump back on course I was met by a younger runner and ran with him for a good bit.. we chatted and ended up catching the lead woman at mile 16 and they took off from me about 17 or so. I ran the rest of the race in no man's land till we joined the 1/2 marathoners. I dodged walkers the rest of the way in..couldn't make heads or tails on which course was which but did the best I could to not collide with anyone. I ended up having a short distance on my watch..this was a first...I also caught Brandon the younger runner and finished just a few seconds behind him..

The goal for this race was basically to run a free race and win a little money if I could...I knew with the race the week before took some out of my legs and I felt that on the back end..My sister did well on her 1/2 ...she took off about 15 min. and Nate my buddy did really well too. technically he was 2nd but they gave him 3rd place money...long story.

smiles all around

Got out to OC bright and early and met up with Nate who signed up for the 20k and we did a small warm up. Ran into J-hat, Danny, Bruce and Lance at registration. I hit the restroom one last time and was cutting it real close and had to drop my warm up clothes on a table there in the auditorium. The 30km was the first race to take off and not many showed up for it, maybe 5-10. I took off and grabbed the lead from the go.

J-hat snapped a few shots as I ran by him..he ran the 5k which was the last race to start. The course was set up on a 5k loop with a few tight turns and one turn around..by the time I got to the last lap I was getting pretty tired of the tight turns and turn around..

My goal was to try and get the all time OK Master record(1:49:28) and I was lucky enough to get it. Also picked up the single age..this was my first overall master record.

Danny was 2nd place in the 30km but was a bit shy of the Single age at 57. Bruce came in about 4th on the  30km and Nate ended up winning the 20km. J-hat had a nice 5k time as he is fixing to head out for Boston in a few weeks.

It was a really nice day and you could feel the wind on the back side but for Ok it was basically no wind at all.

I took 1 gu from about 10-20k nursing it.

went up to Stillwater with Aaron, Amanda and Nate and met a few more friends up there for the Remember the 10 race. I wanted to do the 10k but decided that I would do the 5k  with the weather and seeing how I am planning on racing the memorial marathon next weekend I figured it might take less out of me.

I was certain I made the right choice at race time. The wind was picking up and it was sticky muggy out. We took off and I about took a spill with Pistol Pete the OSU maskot that shot the gun for the start. It was a slight uphill for the first mile and I didn't feel 5k sharp at all. I ran behind Scotty, Nate and the dude that won the 10k for a bit till the 5k split off and the 5k was spread out pretty good by then. I could see the 2 OSU runners out front and Jazz wasn't too far behind them then it was Luis and me. Stayed the same pretty much through the race. I never could get out of 5:26ish pace.

had a nice time with some good running friends.

Race: Oklahoma Memorial Marathon (26.2 Miles) 02:41:31, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.0026.4426.44

I got up to my normal parking spot a little later this year and found someone had already grabbed my spot. I ended up getting a real good one on 5th and Broadway which worked out perfect for my quick get away to Church services after the race. I had planned on hanging out in the pancake church till about 15 till start. I took my racing shoes and a bag up to the church and hung out and ran into  Eric and his daughter, Jimbo and his son, and Roger. Roger question me about having a backpack which I totally goofed on that one... I hurried back to my car and decided to change there and leave my stuff in the car. Thomas my brother was going to be crewing for me along with my nephew Carl and Mary. I just hung out and waited for them to get there and gave them my Nuun bottles. Then we made our way to the pancake church and hung out there till about 15 till.

I got down to the start line and ran into a bunch of buddies. J-hat was doing the quick Boston turn around and I told him to get up there with me but he declined and hung out a bit behind.

I overheard Patrick Gomez saying to some of the 1/2 marathon guys what his plan was 5:22 pace. I knew there was no way he would be able to get the course record this day with the warm temps and wind  this being his debut as well. I figured if he could run that pace I couldn't keep up with him anyhow... My plan was to try and go out at 1:16-1:17 on the first 1/2 and hope that I could hang on to that pace coming back and at least try to get the single age (2:37:ish) or the main goal all time master (2:36ish) both which I know I am able to run and in shape to run. The real challenges with these records are the weather vs the time of year the marathon is ran in OK.

We took off and Patrick took off with a big pack of 1/2 marathoners and I was running with a few myself.

We thinned out real good going down Lincoln towards the capitol. mile 3

After the 10k split I passed a Coyote going up gorilla hill and pretty much ran a solo race the whole rest of the way.

I had my crew give me water/nuuns at mile 7, 12 and 21.  I hit the wind at lake Hefner and saw Patrick about 1-1.5 miles ahead of me going down Lake Hefner trail.

When I got down to S&S park Scotty D ran with me for about a mile. He was waiting at the relay station there.

I saw Craig Thompson at mile 10 and 18 taking pics. He gave me some encouraging words.

When I got down to mile 21 Mary told me that Patrick was 8 min. ahead of me. And I knew the hell I was fixing to pay going down Classen blvd into the wind for the next 3-4 miles.  Toward the end of Classen I had a dude go flying past me and I realized he was the Tulsa Runner Relay guy. The last few miles were a real struggle and I basically went into survival mode. Jazz (OK Runner Relay) caught me and ran with me for about a 1/2 mile at mile 25 and I told him to go catch the Tulsa Runner Relay just ahead of us.. I found out later that 1st place  Patrick Gomez was cramping pretty bad and I was catching up to him. He is a great runner and has a lot of talent and I was happy for him. I was impressed at the fearlessness he had going into the race..he was on pace at the 1/2 to get the record. He ended up only beating me by a couple of minutes.

Well I really hadn't planned on running this race and probably wouldn't have if my Grandma's marathon plans hadn't fell apart due to a death in the family. I've always wanted to do this race and I'm sure glad I did.

I some how persuaded Aaron and Amanda in going with me on a whim..Kyle was already out there hanging out with Talbot who graciously put us up for the weekend and showed us an awesome time.

We loaded up and headed out Sunday just after morning church services and dodged thunderstorms that produced hail, tornado warnings and a funnel cloud sightings all through Kansas..This worked out pretty good seeing how boring the Kansas drive is.  We ended up making it to Talbots about 8-8:30 and they had dinner waiting for us. Luckily they were nice enough to pick up our packets with all our race bib's and what not.

Team OK RUNNER

We got up bright and early I think i woke up on Oklahoma time because I was up before the alarm clock.. we had a small breakfast and jogged down from Talbots place.

l

Literally 1 mile away from the start line.. Even made a Starbucks stop. I could tell on the jog down that the altitude was showing some effects on me. We did some warmup strides and a few port stops and off we went.

Right away I noticed how thirsty I was within the first 1/2 mile. I took water at the first stop and glanced at my watch and it had me at 5:20ish and I knew this wasn't going to be the pace for me...not today. We got in about a mile and a half and started up a small hill that put the altitude in real perspective..I wondered if I would even break 40 min. I kept plugging along and tried to stay relaxed and distract myself with all the crazy stuff going on around me...

I never really felt great in the race but did about mile 4 start feeling a little more of a 2nd wind and was able to keep the pace around 5:40's. I told some of my running friends that this was the first race in a long time that  I actually thought about and had to fight thoughts of walking. I felt kinda nauseous and thought I was going to puke but never did.

I can remember counting down the miles and k's till the finish.  We made a small turn the last 1/2 mile going into the Folsom stadium and I heard a woman hollering at the dude in front of me to show his bib#. She actually ran out to get him and I made my way up the last hill and into the stadium that had folks all around cheering. It was really neat. They laid out some white plastic flooring on the field to run on and it was really slick. I thought my feet were going to come out from me on the last corner and swung out wide and picked off a dude right at the finish.

Aaron(Top OK Runner) had a great race with a 33:## was waiting on me  and we stood around waiting for all the OK crew to come in  till the race people  ran us off. We had a spot that we met up and took some pics then headed back to Talbots and changed and ate some then rode some bikes back down and met Roger and Blakes crew to watch the elite race and watch the awesome Memorial day celebration. It was very moving and fun to be a part of the whole thing.

This was by far one of the best races I have been to. Well organized supported and fun to be a part of.

We made it back to Talbots to pack up and shower then  grabbed a burger and headed back to OK.

Sweet mileage week!

Race: Fireball Classic 10k (49th running) (6.21 Miles) 00:35:51, Place overall: 5, Place in age division: 1
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
6.106.2012.30

Drove Arya and Kyle down to Ada for the running of oldest race in Oklahoma and to my surprise hardest 10k course I've ran. Several of my running buddies told me about the hill on it and this year instead of doing the 5k I opted to go with the 10 and find out about the hill.

We met up with Aaron and Amanda who had actually gave me a free entry to the race and all of us warmed up together. Arya was going for the record set by Scott Smith last year (31:31) and Amanda was gunning for Ashley Millers CR of (37:5X).

I was not really gunning for any specific time just a good honest effort. I learned long ago to throw all fast time PR performances out the window when summer time in OK hits. PR's coming in the spring or fall unless you go out of state.

We took off right at 7 a. m. and had a nice cloudy day, little wind and a lot of humidity. The first couple of miles was fairly fast with some gradual downhill a few windy turns.

Mile 1 Arya and another college age kid were out front and Aaron and Cale were 10 sec back and I was about 5 sec behind them.

Mile 2.5 we turned E into a sharp up hill I was kinda shocked because several folks told me the monster hill was at mile 4. about mile 3 we turned back north and a dude with a water hose was at a water stop spraying a mist that I gladly ran through and grabbed a quick drink and that water was ICE cold. I poured a bit on the back of my neck and it took my breath away.

At mile 3.5 things were pretty spread out and I could see Ayra had made a nice move on massive hill set before me and broke away from the College kid. Aaron was slightly ahead of Cale and their gap on me continued to grow.

My buddy Jazz that ran the race last year told me this was the only hill he ever walked on. I have never walked up a hill and wasn't planning on walking on this day either. I felt at times that my pace was at a walk but i continued to focus on getting up. The steepest point was at 10% incline on my strava.

basically from 2.5-4.8 is a hill after that it was roll down the windows and get to the finish line.

Ayra was just shy of the record. - :29 sec and Amanda shattered the 10k and brought home $1000 bucks.

Kyle won the 5k but was well shy of a record.

We all regrouped and did a few cool down miles and met up for some breakfast a the Prairie kitchen in Ada. Had a great start to my 4th with some good running friends.

made my way up to Tulsa for the riverside 5k . didn't really know what to expect in a 5k just wanted to run a more up pace effort. I felt strong most all the race and had a kid out surge me with about a 1/4 mile to go. and had another sneek by me right at the line...Did most all the work for the race. we had a slight 5-10 mph wind in our face running north.

Never felt real sharp..but never felt like i really struggled either. I did get out age graded by a dude that ran 17:20.. I ended up getting 75 bucks for the age grade 2nd place master.

Whats the Michigan workout? Explain yourself, haha. ;}

From butlerbrunning on Wed, Aug 24, 2016 at 20:28:53 from 104.52.197.67

The Michigan Workout

In the mid 1970′s, Ron Warhurst, the coach of the University of Michigan, devised a workout for his cross country team that has became a staple for runners throughout the country. Known as “The Michigan,” the workout is designed to simulate the change of paces that runners experience in a race. It is a combination of a fartlek, and short tempo runs, and is one of the most challenging workouts a runner can attempt.

The Michigan consists of the following:

1. The workout begins with a fast mile on a track. The best runners should attempt to run about 15-20 seconds slower than their best mile time. The purpose of this intense mile is to simulate the fast pace at the start of a race.

2. After the mile, jog about 3 minutes before running a slower mile on a road or trail. This mile should be about a minute slower than the track mile.

3. After the road/trail mile, jog 3 minutes and then run a fast 1200 meters on the track at about the pace you ran your first mile.

4. Jog 3 minutes and run another road/trail mile at the pace you ran the first road/trail mile.

5. Jog 3 minutes and run a fast 800 meters on the track

6. (optional) Jog 3 minutes, and run another road/trail mile.

7. Jog 3 minutes and finish with an all-out 400 meter run on the track. It is really important to run this last part of the workout as quick as possible because it simulates a kick at the end of a race.

Only advanced runners should try to incorporate step 6 because the extra road/trail mile makes the workout pretty long. For an experienced runner who has a best time of 4:45 in the mile, this workout might look like this:

Track Mile: 5:10

Road Mile: 6:10

1200: 4:00

Road Mile: 6:10

800: 2:40

Road Mile: 6:10 (optional)

400: 1:06

There is no doubt that this workout is a beast. But it is really a great way to incorporate many different kinds of workouts into one session. Definitely take a few days after running a Michigan to let your body recover.

You got a monster week going! Nice work. Are you still running St George?

From butlerbrunning on Fri, Sep 09, 2016 at 03:17:51 from 104.52.197.67

Thanks Riley.. Yes St George is still in the works... Curious to know how much the altitude will affect me. Have you ever heard any effects from lowlanders?

From RileyCook on Fri, Sep 09, 2016 at 06:28:12 from 73.3.122.191

I haven't heard of people struggling with altitude at StG. The hilly section, you might feel it a little. But, the downhill speeds you up more than the altitude slows you down. I think StG is 3-5 minutes faster than flat course near sea level depending on how well you run downhill.

It's very much a negative split course too. Second half not only has more downhill, but is also at lower elevation.

Have you been able to do any downhill training out there?

From butlerbrunning on Fri, Sep 09, 2016 at 11:16:44 from 166.137.136.93

I've been running a pretty hilly route for here in OK.. I like to think I run downhills pretty good. How would you compare it to Boston?? Or Phoenix? Ive run both of those.

You've been droppin some really good runs down too. I'm getting pretty excited to run at St George.

From RileyCook on Fri, Sep 09, 2016 at 12:51:48 from 208.54.4.144

It's substantially more downhill than Phoenix. The first four miles at Phoenix are somewhat representative of most of StG. The hilly section at StG is worse than Phoenix, but after that section it gets quite steep in some spots. Don't be surprised to see 10k pace splits on some miles.

You'll love the course, fast and scenic. Just save legs for the final 10k as it's a really fast finish if you do have legs left.

From Jason D on Sat, Sep 10, 2016 at 20:11:05 from 24.127.111.174

Very cool! St George should be very exciting this year and CIM seems like a great time of year and a fast course.

Given my downtime this summer and less flexible schedule than I'm used to I'm pretty much just running. Might grab a short race but no real plans for the first time in probably 4-5 years. I'll look to run a sizeable marathon and half marathon PR in early spring if things go well.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.0026.2026.20

This was my first trip to Utah and hopefully the beginning of many more. The setting is absolutely breathe taking. I woke up at 3:15 jumped in the shower quickly and proceeded to get my racing attire on. I noticed that I forgot to pack band-aids so I took and used some duct tape that I had bought to tape my gu's to my water bottles just so happen to have some American flags on them.( boy howdy they were fun taking off ..but they worked)

I made my way down to the gas station and bought a big ol cup of coffee for the bus ride up. I sat down with a dude from St Petersburg FL his name was Charles Ryan. We hit it off well and talked the entire way up. This was his 2nd STG and he pretty much knew what to expect. I hung out with him for a while and decided to head over to the elite corral and try to meet some of the frb guys that I never met.

I used the port and came out and sat down for a bit and recognized Riley and Ben as they came into the corral. I gave them a wave and met them and chatted for a bit. I also met Fritz and Scott. I hung out and shadowed Ben and Riley till gun time. Two super nice guys that have really been putting it a lot of hard work. I actually called Riley to win at STG on Strava a few weeks back.

I chatted with Scott just before the gun and decided to run with him on the first half. We wanted to go through about 1:15-1:16. We went through the first mile right at 5:50 but slowed to 6:10 on the 2nd mile. I almost twisted my ankle real good in a wake up rut cut in the middle of the road. I was very cautious after that when hitting tangents.  After the first 3 miles I could tell my breathing was off  (I think due to the altitude) and Scott took off at the first water stop where I slowed to get my bottle that I actually never got. The rest of the water stops were spot on..they actually used walkie talkies to communicate and someone was standing out holding my nuun for me to take... I tried not to panic so much knowing the big downhill to come on the backend. I really wanted to make it over the hills without redlining.

I made it to Veyo and knew if I got over this hill it would be the worst part. It slowed me considerably and I tried not to pay too much attention to my watch. I got to half way and was concerned that the sub 2:30 might be out of my reach with the clock at 1:17:50.

I told myself to just trust in my training and it was still possible. I let loose pretty good about mile 15. It was really weird to look down at the pace in the middle of a marathon and see the pace going faster than my 5k pace. I was feeling pretty good so I just continued on. I passed several guys there at Snow Canyon and finally caught a couple more down on the final 10k.

I was feeling really strong on the last 10 till about the last mile with about .5 to go I turned down toward the finish line and was so ready to be done. The road coming into the finish was cracked and a bit uneven and it really bothered me.

I came across the finish line knowing I had a PR which really felt good. A lot of the  leaders were standing around chatting and I asked Riley how he did and he was pretty excited and rightly so. He told me that he missed the record by a few seconds but he had a huge PR and Ben did as well. I congratulated Scott for winning the masters and made my way for a quick massage.

After my massage I had to get my stuff and book it to the hotel, shower and get out of there by 11 checkout time. I forgot to check and see if I had won anything in the early bus drawing and tried to go back down to see but failed to find a parking place close enough to get out of there for my 1:30 flight.

I also didn't make it to the awards but talked to a woman that told me they would mail it to me.

I made my flight home but didn't get to eat anything till about 6:00 pm Oklahoma time. I did manage to eat a few cashew packets and pretzels from the race. I really wasn't too hungry after anyway.

Had a great time and felt fortunate to meet some really nice folks.

How are your legs feeling? Did you feel the effects of the downhill on your quads? It's obviously different with your high mileage base, but I can't fathom running for a few more days and you've already put in 32 miles since the race. We're the same age, just wondering.

From butlerbrunning on Wed, Oct 05, 2016 at 14:46:59 from 104.52.197.67

Russ,

Surprisingly my legs feel really good. I would say yes my legs are pretty toughened up by the miles but the downhill definitely had me concerned. I really never got too sore just a bit in my calves but my quads weren't really sore at all. I was shocked. Miles will make you a lot stronger.

From Russ on Fri, Oct 07, 2016 at 14:08:51 from 74.114.3.253

Wow, that's just crazy to me your legs were fine. It took me 3+ days to walk normally again (same as the previous 6 downhill marathons or ultras), but you're right - it's all about the miles. I've noticed with Jake and other high mileage people that 26.2 was just a blip on the radar for them, good to hear that even at our age it's the same. Keep on running and breaking those Masters records!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.279.3212.59

Headed up to Tulsa with some running bud's to run the Tulsa Run. Just happened to be the 4th year of the Master National Championship race. I ended up getting a comp and decided to race it and if anything else just use it as a tempo for the week. The weather was pretty much horrible with high heat and winds but I went into the race with no expectations other than put in a good effort. The comp was really good and I went out at the gun with the lead guys till about mile 1. after that they separated from me about 10-15 sec a mile. We had an out and back from miles 3-5 roughly and you could see where you stacked up. I was about 20 sec behind the actual turning point and noticed Greg Mitchell had made his move. He was a past champ that basically ran away from everyone. He was also the favorite to win and rightly so. Gardiner and David Angell were running together maybe 5 sec behind Mitchell at that point. When I made the turn I saw a 50 yr old dude James Jackson from Tx about 10-15 sec behind me. I basically ran the rest of the race solo in no man's land with plenty of heat and hills to go around. I was ready to see the finish line.

When I finally made it in I saw Gardiner hunched over and asked him how he did and he was really excited and said he won. He told me that Mitchell had blown up and he passed him about .5 mile out from the finish. Mitchell collapsed at the finish and had to get poked with an IV.

Our team ended up getting 2nd place to Cal Coast again.  Looks like I've got plenty of motivation going into next year..3rd year in a row to get 4th overall and 3rd year in a row to get 2nd place team...

I think I felt kinda flat with the big taper...I think my body feels sharper going into a race with some miles on my legs.....Note to self...*****

Went over to Scott Smith's place for some burgers afterwards. And forgot to mention some running friends did some really remarkable things in the open race. Arya won the Top OK money for men and Amanda took 5th overall money and top OK women money home...with a PR to boot. and Aaron had a breakout race and finished not to far behind Arya.

Wow I met Eric D out at Draper Marina after work for a tempo and just before we took off I decided to make a donation the the port- a - pot and when I opened the door to my surprise I spotted a 45 Cal pistol sittin on the tp holder. I was shocked to see that it was chambered and ready to fire. I was mostly concerned with playground next to it and decided to take it back to my car and call the police.. As I exited and jogged over to my car my buddy gave me a strange look...ha

I felt kinda weird jogging over to my car with a gun. We unloaded it and called 911 and waited like 30-45 min for the cops to show. I handed them over the gun and gave them my info and off we went for a tempo.. Eric went 3 and I continued on for 3 more..was really tired today and still feeling somewhat sick.

Race: Williams Tulsa Route 66 Marathon (26.2 Miles) 02:35:45, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
1.0026.4027.40

Met up with J-Hat bright and early and drove a hr or so up to Tulsa where we met up with Ean and picked up our race packets. We got a quick mile jog in and dropped our bags off and headed over to the start line.

It was pretty cold standing around for probably 10 minutes or so. The sun was coming up and it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day to run.

We shot out of there and I noticed about a 1/4 mile in Scotty D shooting up to the front. A few other quick starters went with him but fell off by the first mile. I was about 3rd place after the first 2 miles and was leading the marathon.

I tucked in behind Mario going into the windy spots and really surged big going down a hill from 2-3 zipping by him and reeling in the 2nd place 1/2 guy Dan. I went by him from 2-3 and Mario and I swapped off going through mile 8. I slow just a bit at a water stop and he had maybe a 5-10 sec gap the rest of the way..I noticed he took a wrong turn and tried to holler at him to let him know that he was heading down the marathon course. The police escort finally broke the news to him and he was very upset. I hated it for him but really it was his own fault..the had about 5-6 big signs showing the direction of each race. I guess he didn't see them.

I basically ran the rest of the race solo. I had some gummy bears tucked away in my shorts in a zip lock I was saving for a snack on the back end. I actually fumbled them at mile 20 and just decided to continue on. Mile 22-23 was really windy. mile 23-24 was really hilly and mile 24-25 was pretty good with a downhill and marathoners cheering me on made it much easier to keep going.

I saw a shiny quarter in the road at mile 25 and wanted to stop and pick it up but didn't. I was really excited when i made the last turn and started to realize I was fixing to win my first marathon. I was fixing to take down the all time master record in OK as well. (The main reason for running was to try and get the record.) I was pumping up the crowd and high fiving everyone that would. I cut the tape and was given a few minutes then a bunch of tv and newspaper people got my story. I waited for Ean and he was pretty happy coming across in sub 3. J-Hat had some stomach issues about mile 15.

Looking forward to going to CIM in a few weeks. I may have risked a slower time there but I don't think I would trade it for my first Marathon W and the all time master OK record. (44) single age record as well.

Top notch racing for this "on a whim" marathon! Legendary. Oklahoma marathons take a tough mindset to hit a fast time due to courses and weather. You have got the toughness! You now have the record. Congrats. Proud of you!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Made my way up to Edmond bright and early to do the turkey trot. Most races around here really gouge prices for races which I am not a huge fan of. I figured 20 bucks race day morning was very acceptable.

I basically wanted to get out before feasting and get a nice effort in. I told myself that if I was under 17 I would be good with it.

We took off and I felt fairly good for having run a marathon 4 days before. I caught myself trying to slow several times and did small pickups.

Arya took off from the gun and never looked back. I ran with Charlie to the turn around and drafted off a tall high school maybe college kid going into the wind and up the only hill. Riden took off up the hill and gapped us pretty good. I decided the kid I was drafting on was slowing down so I went around him and tried to catch up with Riden and Tanner.  The last mile or so was solo effort and the 1 mile fun run was a fiasco merging with the 5kers.

I was pleased with my time and how well I felt.

I had several friends PR and several really close to PRing. This race is probably the biggest 5k around and definitely draws the better completion.

I did a long 7 mile cool down with Charlie and Arya after. Roger, Jordan, and Blake for a bit of it.

Forgot to mention I ran the race in a coonskin cap. YEEYEE

Joe, Ean and I shared a room and woke up at 4:15 and through our stuff on and grabbed a quick light breakfast and hopped on the bus just outside the hotel.

We got up to Folsom Prison and sat on the bus for 15-20 min before we decided to get off and hit the port. We hit the port no problems and had about 45 min to kill. We just hopped on a random bus that had some extra seats open and chatted with some other runners till about 20 till gun time. We dropped off our clothes at bag drop and headed down to start. Joe and I got a quick pee break off the side of the road when we hopped off the bus. After that Joe and I jogged around on the side for about 1/2 mile or so, mainly to stay warm. We lined up and I spotted Scotty D and planned on going with him for as long as I could.

We took off and I felt really good. We started a bit slower but I was fine with it. Scotty is an absolute master to negative splitting. We went through 10k with Stephanie Bruce and Chatted with her a bit. Scotty used to run in college with her coach Ben Rosario and we have a mutral friend in Scott Smith.

We kept going at 10k and ran with a group of about 8-10 guys off and on for the first 1/2. I was really surprised when I went through 1/2 faster than I ever have. I still felt somewhat good and Scotty was feeling better cause he was pulling away slightly.

About mile 14-15 I slowed about 10 sec a mile and started feeling the effects of running a marathon 2 weeks prior. I still felt like I could maintain under 6 min pace and made that somewhat a goal within the race.

About mile 20 S Bruce caught me and was with another dude and I latched on with them for a mile or so then she pulled away from us both.

Mile 22 I hit the 6 min pace and it was a good survival drag in to the finish..

My breathing was fine and the course was perfect. My legs simply didn't have any get up and go in them. When I came in the finish they annouced that I was unoffically the 3rd place master. I was really surprised and thankful I made it in without falling off completely.

Scotty D ended up with like 2:28:01 ish and was really just using this race as a rust buster.

Ean was sick with a cold and i really felt sorry for him. He ended up just over 3 hrs and Jenny right behind him.

Joe took a whopping 15 min off his marathon PR and got a BQ for the first time.

We had a great trip other than Ean being sick.

Me, Joe, Ean, Jenny and Scotty

Did some pacing duties for a few buddies on a bad weather day. Was able to get Brett under 18. that was the goal.

Roger, Ean, Brett and I took off and the plan was stick together and I would take the blunt of the wind. We got to about 1k and things got pretty hairy with the cold north wind..I actually wondered if any of us would be able to do it on that day. My hands were completely numb and it was mighty miserable.

Roger and Ean fell off about 1 mile and Brett stuck right on my tail. We got to the turn around and the pace went right down. My hands started getting some feeling back and I was certain that if Brett could stay with me he would get well under 18. We hit 5:30's coming back and he wasn't breathing too bad.

The last stretch was directly into the wind and Brett asked me to stay with him. I took him to about 50m and told him to go around and get it. He was super excited. It was exciting to see a friend get a goal they have been trying to get. Ean was about 30 sec behind me and Roger about 30 sec behind Ean.  Roger was fighting off a cold earlier in the week and Ean has been doing some crazy miles. It was a great effort by all on such an epic winter day.

Aaron, Amanda, Andrew and Kels were out cheering us on as well. They did some warmup and cold down miles with us. After the race we all went to POPS for some breakfast.
